American Sign Language Interpretation

American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation is available for prescheduled access performances, at no additional charge. We have a designated ASL section for prime viewing of the professional interpreters and the stage.
Seating for ASL at the San Jose Center for the Performing Arts

Assistive Listening Devices
Complimentary, infrared, assistive listening devices are available at all of our performances for greater ease of hearing. The devices amplify sound and may be used with or without a hearing aid from any seat in the theatre. Ask for an induction neck loop if you use a hearing aid with a “T” switch. Headsets are distributed from a kiosk in the hallway after you pass the ticket ushers. You will be asked to leave either a driver’s license or some other form of identification when you check out a device. Assisted listening devices amplify the sound through a receiver throughout the live performance.

Audio Described Performances
Audio description provides professional narration of actions and visual elements on stage that are broadcast live through a receiver throughout the performance. The device may be used from any seat in the theatre, during our prescheduled access performances, at no additional charge.

Braille Programs
Complimentary Braille programs are available from the Education & Outreach Department kiosk near the Box Office.

Large Print Programs
Large print programs are available from the ushers and the Education & Outreach Department kiosk near the Box Office. These programs are a scaled-down version of the small-print program, and are available for all patrons at no extra charge..

Mobility Accommodations

There is wheelchair seating for up to 12 patrons per performance. The main entrances of The San Jose Center for Performing Arts are equipped with power doors and the house management staff will happily assist in directing you to the accessible entrance closest to your seats. There is an elevator to access the balcony level located near the Box Office. All restrooms on the main floor of the San Jose Center for Performing Arts are accessible; with one companion restroom located in the Main Lobby between the Box Office and the elevator. The facility has two main accessibility ramps; one off Almaden Boulevard and one off Park Avenue. Designated parking spaces for vehicles with valid DMV disability parking permits are available along Park Avenue adjacent to the San Jose Center for Performing Arts. These are metered spaces available on a first come first served basis.

Open Captioned Performances
Open captioning visually displays the play’s dialogue and lyrics as they are spoken on stage throughout the entire performance. Captioning units may be used from any seat in the theatre, during our prescheduled access performances, at no additional charge. Patrons who wish to share units need to be seated together. Captioning units are available for anyone who wishes to enhance the theatre experience by not missing a word! Simply reserve a captioning unit by calling the Box Office at 408.453.1550.
